What is clutter?
Clutter means that there's a bunch of stuff laying around your places and it makes your place look untidy or messy.
That's just talking about the physical items that you keep around the house. Clutter can also refer to your heart and mind.
If there's clutter in your life, whether if it's physical or not, it can affect mental well-being and cause a burnout. If you no longer need it, you can consider it clutter.
What is decluttering?
To put it simply, it's throwing out anything that will block you from becoming less stress and more productive. You don't have to throw EVERYTHING out, just the things that you will replace or no longer need.
Here's why decluttering will help your well-being:
There are so many reasons why decluttering is important, but following are the reasons why I declutter.
1. Less stress
I've seen it firsthand, where you can't do anything because you're always thinking about cleaning, but then you get even more stressed because you don't know where to start. So you put it off and then it repeats.
But...
If you know that the source of your stress is the clutter, why not start with the little things. There's NO RULE that says you have to do it all at once. If you feel that the task is too BIG then start off with something small like getting rid of a couple things you haven't worn or used in 90 days and then you can continue from there.
2. Sleep easier
It's true that a cluttered environment makes you feel more anxious and suffocated and that will make you more restless.
After I decluttered and changed the position of my bed. I was able to feel more at peace and can fall asleep faster and more easily. Before I moved the bed, it was in front of the TV. My boyfriend and I would watch TV every night before bed and we couldn't sleep until really late.
Throwing out that desk was a good decision for me.
It's the same for my boyfriend. He decluttered his desk and his wardrobe, so now he can sleep and wake up early without having to worry about cleaning his desk and wardrobe all the time.
3. More productivity
Before I changed the position of my bed, I had a big ol' desk against the wall, but it divided the room in half. It made the room feel small and suffocating. But also I put so many things on the desk because there was a lot of surface.
So I decided that I didn't need it anymore and wanted my own little area where I could be more productive and look out the window.
AND....
Best decision ever... I'm more productive now that I don't have to worry about cleaning the desk and my work area is in front of a window and turned away from the TV.
So when I'm working, I can't watch TV and vice versa.
It's a AMAZING what a little declutter can do to your productivity level.
4. Save money
Since I don't have the need to buy anything for my room, I don't have the need to spend a ton of money. Decluttering helped me allowed me to find out that I have things that I FORGOT existed. I then will try to reuse it, but if I can't then I will get rid of it.
It seems counter-intuitive because you've spent money on that item and can't let go. But if you think about it, if you're not using it, then you've already let it go in your mind
So sell it or give it away as a gift or recycle it.
5. More space
My room is BIG, but with all the stuff that I have (plus my boyfriend's stuff), it made the room tiny. After removing the unwanted items, the room looks more spacious and neater.
At the end of the day, everyone has different room size. If you have a small room, try to keep the things in your room limited to the necessities that will ONLY benefit your well-being. Having more space will give you a peace of mind for better sleep, more productivity and reasons to save money.
