The answer to that questions really depends on how you are spending your time in Cancun.
Our first impression is that it looks good from the outside and the rooms were not all that bad. Is it our first choice? No, not really, but our family had already booked this place, so we went along with it.
The Royal Cancun had two sister hotels. One is called the Royal Sands and the other one is called the Royal Islander. I went to the Royal Sands because some family members went there and said that it was a lot better than the royal Cancun.
The royal islander was all the way in Playa Del Carmen so that was a little too far out-of-the-way for us even though they provided a shuttle it would still take a minute to get there.
Honestly, if I had a choice to redo the hotel bookings, I would stay at the Royal Sands. The Royal Sands had more amenities in terms of restaurants and the food quality was better than the royal Cancun. The pool was bigger as well and it was facing the beach which was a nice view.
The Royal Cancun has 2 major restaurants on property and 1 pool bar.
The food buffet food was MEH. La Trattoria (restaurant on property) has decent food. The steak we got was DELISHHH! And I tried beef carpaccio and pasta with a salmon sauce for the first (DELISH)!!!
Back to the point about staying here depends on what you want; if you’re looking for just a place to stay with you do day trips to Tulum or Xplor or Xel-ha or anything else; then it would be a good place because you’re not really spending much time there.
However, if you’re looking to stay by the pool or beach and take advantage of the « all inclusive perks » then we recommend the Royal Sands. The perks at the Royal Cancun does work at their sister hotels, but if you miss the bus going back, you have wait another 2 hours (or more , depending on your location) for the next bus.
