How To Not Get Lost In Japan

Updated: Jun 2

I was young & naive and I thought I knew what I was doing. Oh boy was I wrong!

Before going to Japan, I was in Vietnam (that’s a story for another time). All I packed was a backpacking backpack. The whole trip was about 3 weeks and yep I jammed everything that I needed for 3 weeks into 1 backpack. It was a daring move, would I do it again? No, probably not. At least not for a long trip like that.

Anyways, back to the story. I just landed in Osaka, Japan on March 19, 2018. It was cold and rainy. I assumed (never assume) that wifi in Japan was just as good as wifi in America. So when I saw the pocket wifi for rent, I walked straight pasted it and didn‘t even look back.

I was so excited to get to my Airbnb, so I hopped on the train station and headed into Osaka city. It was around 8 PM (20:00) when I exited the train station in Osaka. And in an instance I regretted my decision to walk past that booth.

Simply put - I, for the life of me, could not connect to the wifi for more than a minute. And I tried hopping wifi too and that did not work!

So for the next 30 minutes to an 1 hr (it felt like an eternity), I searched for my Airbnb based on a map that I SCREENSHOT from the confirmation email. Not only that, but it was cold and rainy.

Yep, that‘s me. Young & naive.

I finally found my Airbnb with the help of a nice pair of mom & daughter, who did not speak any English. But still somehow managed to lead me to the right place. By the time I found my airbnb, I was clothes were drenched and I was freezing. The airbnb had a pocket wifi ready for their guests. That put my mind to ease until I go to the next city.

Next time in Japan…

I definitely learned my lesson about having no internet in Japan. The first thing on my list will be the pocket wifi.

Happy traveling!
